Week 5 did not give us the completely unhinged college football Saturday we occasionally get blessed with, but there was still plenty to sort through. USC came back from an 11-point deficit to survive Washington and keep the Lincoln Riley conversation from reaching DEFCON 1, while Alabama went into Starkville and completely dismantled Mississippi State behind another ridiculous performance from Keelon Russell. Then there is Florida, which followed its dominant win over Ole Miss by getting blown out 45-17 by Missouri because apparently trying to understand the SEC this season is a pointless exercise.
Ohio State also ended the Iowa dream rather quickly as Jeremiah Smith continued making his case as one of the best players in the country, while Friday night gave us a controversial ending between Pitt and Virginia Tech and Northwestern somehow running for 413 yards against Penn State. Michigan followed last week’s encouraging offensive performance by scoring one offensive touchdown in a loss to Minnesota, and Miami’s demolition of Clemson gave us another reminder of just how dramatically the balance of power in the ACC has changed.
Then we get into the rest of the board. Notre Dame had to work harder than expected against North Carolina, Tennessee made a quarterback change against Auburn, BYU escaped an extremely ugly night in Fort Worth and Texas A&M discovered that the best cure for back-to-back losses is apparently playing Arkansas. Kentucky-South Carolina might also have turned the Shane Beamer hot seat from uncomfortable to something closer to broil.
Finally, it is absolute rapid-fire time: Georgia handles Vanderbilt, Texas Tech produces one of the strangest interceptions imaginable against Colorado, Iowa State and West Virginia play the game of the day, Wake Forest annihilates Stanford, North Dakota State keeps doing North Dakota State things and Purdue somehow beats Illinois. Yes, really. Purdue beat Illinois.
