The Dallas Mavericks have been saved.
Not by anything of their own doing, but by an act of God that allowed them to take Cooper Flagg with the first overall pick in the NBA Draft a couple of nights ago.
On February 1, the day that the Mavericks decided to blow up the future in lieu of supposedly getting better in the present by trading Luka Doncic to the Lakers, the prospects of the organization regaining the momentum it had following the 2024 NBA Finals appeared slim. The fanbase had been alienated, and they were angry. Countless “Fire Nico” chants rained down throughout every single Mavericks game inside the American Airlines Center, with protests lining the streets in response to what’s been dubbed one of the worst trades in professional sports history. Without the support of the fans, and with a roster that was old and injury-prone, it appeared that the Mavericks were headed toward years of irrelevance.
