The Football Notebook: Red River’s Majesty, Manchester City’s Strange Win and the NFC East’s Diasterclass

It was a strange weekend of football, that’s for sure.

Welcome to The Football Notebook, the weekly repository where I digest the football weekend that was while simultaneously racking my brain for answers about the existential problems of the universe.

Yeah, I know. It’s serious.

The stars in the sky often tell us things about ourselves, sometimes without us even asking. Humanity has spent thousands of years staring upward in search of answers to questions about who we are and why we’re here, which is admirable but also seems needlessly complicated when football exists. Why does Arch Manning throw that pass? Why does the NFC East continue to test the boundaries of human suffering? What does it mean to watch Manchester City chase a Premier League title when nobody knows what that title might eventually be worth? These are the questions that keep philosophers awake at night, or at least the philosophers who subscribe to Peacock and ESPN+.

The universe rarely provides easy answers, and football is usually even less cooperative. We can, however, open a blank page and attempt to make sense of it all.

Let’s open the notebook.
