As you're reading this, I'm probably 36,000 feet above the ground inside an Airbus A321neo that's taking me, alongside my friend and fellow host of Bleav in TCU, Zion Trammell, to San Francisco.
Together, we are embarking on a short, five-day journey around the Bay Area to see all that we can. From the Golden Gate Bridge to the Painted Ladies, I'm sure we'll do it all. But those attractions, iconic and beautiful as they may be, are only part of the equation. San Francisco and the areas surrounding it are filled to the brim with baseball. From the Giants to the A's, America's pastime is truly alive in Northern California.
This trip to America's most populous state is the second leg of my summer of baseball that I wrote about several weeks ago. The adventure began in Cleburne about a month ago with the Railroaders of the American Association. Now, after a brief hiatus, the campaign is back on, this time in California.
As I said in that post about the summer of my dreams, there will be frequent posts about this trip on the website over the coming days. It'll start with a trip to Sacramento tomorrow to watch the Athletics play in their temporary digs. Who knows what that place will bring? Probably a whole load of sadness for what should've been in Oakland, if I had to guess. Oh, speaking of which, while it's impossible to attend a Major League Baseball game at the Coliseum now because of John Fisher's ineptitude, it's still possible to stand outside of it and marvel at what once was. I cannot wait for that.
The crown jewel of San Francisco's baseball scene is Oracle Park, though. Set right on the water, the Giants play in one of the most scenic ballparks in the country. The view over right field onto McCovey Cove is one that I've been waiting to see my entire life. And while we won't be in kayaks hoping for a splash hit, we'll be sitting in the stands behind home plate yearning for a good time at the yard.
Whatever else we might do remains a surprise to both you and me. The goal is to have a fun time, and I'm sure we won't have any trouble accomplishing that task.
